2020 NNABA Annual Meeting: Sponsorship Opportunities

Dear NNABA Members and Friends:

The NNABA Executive Board decided to postpone the upcoming Annual Meeting that was to be held in Albuquerque, NM on April 5, 2020.  The decision was based on several factors:

  1. On March 12, 2020 the New Mexico Department of Health issued and order prohibiting any and all gatherings of more than 100 people.
  2. Many governmental, Tribal, Universities and Colleges, as well as organizations are placing no travel or very restrictive travel protocols on staff and employees.
  3. The Fed Bar which is held in conjunction with the NNABA annual meeting will be cancelled this year.
  4. We also want to be respectful of the health of our members, their families, and their communities including elders and those that are immunocompromised.

The current protocols and suggestions by the World Health Organization is to be taken seriously.  As representatives of the Native American legal community we have an obligation to be leaders in our community and that includes leading by example. Slowing the curve of public spread requires minimizing person-to-person contact. While we could discourage attendance from those that are uncomfortable or who have travel or other restrictions placed upon them, putting the burden on attendees is unfair and creates a stressful power-dynamic. E.g. the attendees may be personally uncomfortable in attending, but don’t want to miss out on the networking possibilities, supporting leadership, or NNABA’s goals.

Accordingly the upcoming NNABA Annual meeting will be postponed and rescheduled.  We are working to provide an annual report and other information in an online format to share with everyone in the near future.   We will be providing updates on the future meeting as well as the transition of NNABA leadership from my term as President to welcome and support Thomasina Real Bird as she continues NNABA’s goals of diversity, inclusion and increasing a respect and understanding of the Native American legal community and its members.

Thank you all for your understanding.  Please take care of yourselves and your families and make decisions that are in your best health interests.
